How this schedule supports learning

We intentionally developed the schedule to support student learning and development, for example:

Balanced literacy

This includes four distinct parts: read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading. Each component is designed to aid scholars in their reading growth and mastery.

Writer’s workshop

Our scholars write every day, giving them the knowledge, skills and habits of successful writers. They also have the opportunity to try their hand at different types of writing (expository, narrative, and persuasive) throughout the year.

In kindergarten, scholars begin exploring mathematical concepts using a variety of materials and techniques, and are exposed to many different types of problems.  Our math curriculum introduces the scholars to a topic and then builds upon that concept as new ones are introduced.

Longer day

Many of our students are coming to kindergarten with reading gaps. We need more time to fill to help them catch up and become college ready.

Student choice

The schedule empowers students to make choices about what activities they participate in through Special Classes. This allows our scholars to begin to identify their passions at a young age.
