“I work at Hiawatha because I’m surrounded by people who not only care about and support me, but constantly push me to become a better teacher.”
Hiawatha Academies Teacher
Growing Learners. Growing Leaders.
Hiawatha Leadership Academy-Northrop (HLA-Northrop or HLA-N) is one of Hiawatha Academies‘ network of high performing college-preparatory schools focused on closing the achievement gap in Minneapolis. Hiawatha Academies was founded by civic leaders, parents, educators and business people who want our scholars to receive an education that demands their best in behavior, attitude, and effort, and that challenges them to achieve to their highest potential.
HLA-Northrop is the younger of the two elementary schools in the network. We opened in 2013, and moved into our permanent home on the HLA-Northrop campus in 2014. HLA-Northrop currently serves 390 Kindergartners through fourth grade scholars.
Our school uses best practices shown to help children develop the skills they need for success in college and life. These include collaboration, responsibility, empathy, and self discipline. We blend our college-preparatory curriculum with a social justice focus, ensuring our scholars are becoming civic leaders. Since HLA-Northrop opened its doors in 2013, it has received awards and grants for its academic performance, work in closing the achievement gap, and creating quality schools.
